It revolves around the central question, if-given the recent power of ethno-nationalist politics-historians should follow Lepore’s call for “a new Americanism, as tough-minded and openhearted as the nation at its best,” and if refocusing on what Lepore sees as a better history of the nation is an apt response. This controversy has gained new momentum since the recent publication of two books by historian Jill Lepore. In this essay, I discuss the latest controversy over the role of the nation in the history and historiography of the United States. “To love this particular nation is to love the world.” Illumination by Rowan Speedwell5/21/2023 On a frigid winter night, college freshman Will stumbles into the shelter of a church during choir practice. Tao Te Ching by Stephen Mitchell5/21/2023 The obscure has been made transparent and available." - Common Boundary "Mitchell's great talent is to communicate with the profound simplicity utterly appropriate for this task. "Beautiful and accessible the English, as 'fluid as melting ice,' is a joy to read throughout." - The New Republic It embodies the virtues its translator credits to the Chinese original: a gemlike lucidity that is radiant with humor, grace, largeheartedness, and deep wisdom." - Huston Smith, author of The Religions of Man "Mitchell's rendition of the Tao Te Ching comes as close to being definitive for our time as any I can imagine. In eighty-one brief chapters, Lao-tzu's Tao Te Ching, or Book of the Way, provides advice that imparts balance and perspective, a serene and generous spirit, and teaches us how to work for the good with the effortless skill that comes from being in accord with the Tao-the basic principle of the universe. It embodies the virtues its translator credits to the Chinese original: a gemlike lucidity that is radiant with humor, grace, largeheartedness, and deep wisdom." - Huston Smith, author of The Religions of Man The bestselling, widely acclaimed translation from Stephen Mitchell When it is the parents who always schedule, decide and provide advantages, it takes away the chance for their kids to learn the skills that will truly put them at an advantage.Ī parent trap is a situation in which parents are drawn to solve problems, make decisions or rescue children in a way that ultimately stifles growth opportunities. Parents want the best for their kids and they want to do everything they can to ensure their children have every opportunity for “success.” However, the trap is when parents “give” their children advantages. It is a tough world out there and I need to give my children every advantage to be competitive in the college and job market. Would you answer true or false to the following statement? Yet, the pressure is there and it is that pressure that causes parents to fall into parent traps. Are they making all of the right choices about their children? Logically, most parents know there is no way to follow every recommendation and you would never expect other parents to be perfect. That leads many parents to question themselves. Everywhere you turn there is advice from friends, family and the media telling you what to do to be a perfect parent. The minute you become a parent, the pressure is on to do everything right. Apology by plato5/20/2023 We'll leave you to think about who's got the better deal. Now we must part, we to die and you to live. It's not often you find people who are quite as thoroughgoing a pain in the ass as we are. But when you do kill us, as we know you will, you will regret it. We do our best to be a royal pain in the ass to everyone. We understand that you'd like to kill us. To anybody we've omitted from the above list: fuck off. To the left-wing people who read us and think that posting our cartoons on Facebook is a substitute for action: fuck off. To the right-wing people who don't read us and say we're a bunch of puerile amateurs: fuck off. To the Catholic Church, who says it spreads peace and understanding while actually supporting intolerance and oppression: fuck off. To the French, who were all too happy to collaborate with the Nazis when the opportunity presented itself: fuck off. To the Germans, who want us to believe that none of them had anything to do with the Third Reich: fuck off. To the Muslims, who react to the exploitation and torture inflicted on them by doing the same thing to their women: fuck off. To the Israelis, who take advantage of their American backers to enslave and torture the Palestinians: fuck off. To the Russians, who pretend they're not just the same as the Americans, except militarily weaker and less honest: fuck off. To the Americans, who rule the world by brute military and economic force, while claiming they're doing it for our own good: fuck off.
